Geohot made the Towelroot one-click rooting application based on the Linux kernel CVE-2014-3153 which was then later patched by Android developers. The great news is that the same exploit Towelroot used remains open to anybody who is running one of the compatible versions of Android KitKat.

Anyone running Android KitKat can try rooting the G2 Mini device using the guide below and see if it works. The Towelroot application cannot brick your device, so there is nothing to fear. If it does not work on your device, you must downgrade to an earlier version of Android KitKat and the guide will start working for you.

LG Optimus G2 Mini

Files You Need

  1. Point your browser on the G2 Mini smartphone to here during the guide:
  2. The Towelroot application roots the LG Optimus G2 Mini running Android KitKat and with the kernel version before June 3 2014. The software updates with the kernel versions that came out after June 3 will not work. Therefore, downgrade your G2 Mini to an earlier version of Android KitKat to get it to work.
  3. You do void the LG warranty when you root the G2 Mini device using the guide below. You must unroot the G2 Mini by manually flashing a stock ROM back on the device to get the warranty working again. That same stock ROM will unroot your device.

Rooting the LG Optimus G2 Mini

  1. Check that your G2 Mini has the Unknown Sources option already enabled so you can install third-party apps from outside the Google Play Store. Head to the Settings > scroll down the menu to Security > scroll down until you can see the Unknown Sources option and tap the box.
  2. Open any web browser on your Android device — you might use the Google Chrome browser that comes with your device.
  3. Enter the URL we put in the files section above to go to the Towelroot homepage.
  4. Tap your finger on the red Lambda icon that is in the middle of the homepage.
  5. Tap on the OK button, followed by Install.
  6. Now tap over the Open button and the Towelroot file will open on your device.
  7. Finish the rooting by tap over the “Make it Ra1n” button.
  8. Soon you will get the success message and a message letting you know that a reboot is not necessary.
  9. Download the SuperSU app from the Google Play Store to keep your G2 Mini device safe.

Download the root checker app to double-check the Towelroot application did in fact grant the rooting permissions to your internal system that you need to start installing the rooted applications.
